Danish Modern Chair Buyers Guide

If you are like a small amount of the world’s population and like to bring together your home and office furnishings in a tasteful yet eclectic theme then using a distinctive piece like a Danish modern chair will set you apart from the average homeowners, as they usually purchase cookie cutter style furniture from those gaudy discount stores that litter the edges of the freeways of most major American cities. There is a large range of choices when it comes to a Danish version of seating, as they have changed in style, shape, and materials over the last several hundred years. The first item to be addressed is your budget, as these chairs will widely vary in price.

Antique Danish chairs that were made around the 1950s will offer that edgy “Mad Men” style of office decor, or lounge atmosphere in a den at home. The smooth sculptured wood frame, and overstuffed weaved fabric cushions will make you think the “Rat Pack” will be showing up for martinis in short order. There are fortunately replicas of this style of chair as the originals can cost upwards of five thousand dollars each. The faux versions will only run between one hundred and fifty to five hundred, depending on the wood, and fabric that are used in it’s creation.

Many people will only look at this form of furniture as vintage or retro, but many of designs will work right into modern and contemporary themes with little trouble at all. If you are lucky enough to run upon a set of six or eight, of these chairs this will make for a great boardroom, or formal dining seating arrangement. These finds are rare, and quite expensive, but should be seriously considered if they are in restorable shape, or already have been restored.

These mid-century marvels will make great conversation piece in any home or work place, and offer a wide enough array of styles to compliment any room that they are place within. Most of these chairs were made of solid teak wood in the last fifty or sixty years, but occasionally you will find one made of black walnut or solid Scandinavian hardwoods or wicker chairs as well. Either way, as long as they are great shape you will have a treasure that will easily become an heirloom piece in your family for generations to come.

Be careful when shopping for used or antique chairs, and make sure the wood is sound, and not cracked or rotted underneath the cushions or on the backside. Check for fitment of the legs, and if loose make sure they can be tightened or you may have to completely rebuild the chair after a short while.
